DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 22 (Physical Organic Chemistry) Oxidn. of glycolic, lactic, mandelic and 9 monosubstituted mandelic acids by bis(2,2'-bipyridyl)copper(II) permanganate (BBCP) in aq. AcOH leads to the corresponding oxo acids. The reaction is first order in BBCP, and Michaelis-Meten-type kinetics were obsd. with respect to the hydroxy acid. Formation consts. for the hydroxy acid-BBCP complexes and the rates of their decompn. were evaluated. Decompn. rates for the complexes show excellent correlation with Hammett's s values with neg. reaction consts. Thermodn. parameters for complexation and the activation parameters for their decompn. were also calcd. The reaction rate increases with the H+ concn.There are some commonly used reagents with their cas registry numbers 6940-50-7 and 16273-37-3 in this article. Decompn. of a-deuteriomandelic acid-BBCP complex showed a substantial kinetic isotope effect. The rate increased with the amt. of AcOH in the solvent mixt. Addn. of 2,2'-bipyridine and CH2:CHCN had no effect on the rate. Suitable mechanisms were proposed. .
