DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 69 (Thermodynamics, Thermochemistry, and Thermal Properties) The std. enthalpies of combustion of adamantan-2-one [700-58-3], adamantan-1-ol [768-95-6], and adamantan-2-ol [700-57-2] were measured in an aneroid combustion bomb calorimeter. The corresponding std. enthalpies of sublimation were calcd. from vapor pressures measured against temp. by means of a Bourdon gauge. The results of the exptl. measurements which are discussed and compared with those calcd. via empirical force-field calcns. are given below; all values are in kcal/mol. Adamanton-2-one, -Dh°f 1344.4, -Dh°f(c) 74.3, DH°sub 19.2, -DH°f(g) 55.1, adamantan-1-ol (values given in same order, resp.) 1392, 95.0, 20.7, 74.3; adamantan-2-ol, 1394.3, 92.7, 21.2, and 71.5.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) When Chinese hamster lung cells (V79) were pretreated with the lipid perturber butylated hydroxytoluene (I) [128-37-0] (.1 mM) before exposure to 5° for up to 12 days, colony survival was higher than in untreated controls (indicating protection), whereas no protection was obsd. at 20°. Protection by lipid perturbers adamantane (II) [281-23-2] or 2-adamantanone [700-58-3] (.1 mM) in serum-free medium in suspension culture at 5° was comparable to control cells with serum. In synchronized cells at 5°, I protected cells in all phases of the cell cycle from death, but to a greater degree in the G1 and S phases, whereas I at 20° resulted in no preferential protection at any phase of the cell cycle. I may be useful for preservation of organs and cells at suboptimal, above freezing temps.
