DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The administration of DL-3-pyridylalanine (DL-3-PA) [28105-69-3] or L-3-pyridylalanine (L-3-PA) [64090-98-8] increased brain serotonin (5-HT) [50-67-9] concn. without affecting the other tissue 5-HT concns. in male Wistar rats. The increase in brain 5-HT upon the administration of DL- or L-3-PA was maintained for a long time (at least 96 h). DL- And L-3-PA decreased tryptophan pyrrolase [9014-51-1] activity in the liver and increased free tryptophan [73-22-3] concn. in the serum. These effects found in rats given a 100 mg/kg dose of DL-3-PA were not statistically different from those in rats given 50 mg/kg dose of L-3-PA. DL- And L-3-PA did not affect the activities of L-tryptophan-5-hydroxylase [9037-21-2], 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan decarboxylase [9042-64-2] and monoamine oxidase [9001-66-5] in the brain. D-3-Pyridylalanine (D-3-PA) [70702-47-5] had no effect on 5-HT concn. or tryptophan-5-HT metabolizing enzymes in rats. These results suggest that the action of DL-3-PA is due to L-3-PA, not D-3-PA.
