DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) High yields of 2-cyanoacrylates are obtained by the reaction of 2,4-dicyanoglutarates (i.e., by-product of 2-cyanoacrylate synthesis) with HCHO and/or polyoxymethylene in the presence of aq. acid soln. Thus, 130 kg distn. residue from 2-cyanoacrylate prodn., contg. 75.1% di-Et 2,4-dicyanoglutarate [90825-50-6] was mixed with 21.3 kg water and, in the presence of 804.6 g 32% NaOH soln. (i.e., to give pH 4-6), treated with 8.83 kg 92% polyoxymethylene (271 mols). This compn. was stirred 45 min at 80-130° in a closed reactor. After distn., dewatering, and thermal splitting, 58.7 kg Et 2-cyanoacrylate [7085-85-0] was obtained.

Fresh medical- or com.-grade adhesive was introduced transorbitally into the subarachnoid space in the vicinity of the right middle cerebral artery. Three sham-operated animals served as controls. The animals were sacrificed at intervals ranging from 2 days to 6 mo. For both medical- and com.-grade adhesive, neuropathol. examn. disclosed acute and chronic granulomatous inflammation of the meninges and hemorrhage. Most animals showed cerebral infarcts of variable size in the territories of distribution of the basal arteries which were in contact with adhesive. Thus, Et 2-cyanoacrylate is capable of producing severe arterial and parenchymal damage. Clin. experience would suggest that Et 2-cyanoacrylate can be used in difficult situations as long as care is taken to protect the brain and local blood vessels.
