DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Mammalian Hormones) Arginine vasotocin (AVT) [113-80-4] was measured in neonatal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and human amniotic fluid by a newly developed specific RIA system. AVT levels were 22 and 14 pg/mL amniotic fluid from 16-20-wk and 34-42-wk pregnancies, resp. and were 6 pg/mL CSF from infants 2-48 days old. Vasopressin [11000-17-2] and oxytocin [50-56-6] were also measured in the samples and could not account for the levels of vasotocin found. The source and function of these neurohypophyseal peptides in CSF and amniotic fluid remains speculative. .

Cortisol [50-23-7] release was also induced by AVP or oCRF, effects that were enhanced by simultaneous administration. Although the responses to AVP alone returned to basal values within 1-3 h, the responses to oCRF were more prolonged (either alone or in combination with AVP). AVP may have a physiol. role as a modulator for ACTH secretion. .
