DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 21 (General Organic Chemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 22, 32, 75 The title homologation procedure involved (1) Darzens condensation of ketones with ClCH2SO2Ph and (2) ring opening of the intermediate a,b-epoxy sulfones with OH- generated by adding H2O to KOCMe3. This new sequence proceeds in good overall yields and with high stereoselectivity. Thus, 3b-tert-butoxy-5a-androstan-17-one gave 94% epoxy sulfone I, which on cleavage with HO- yielded 60% II. The crystal structure of a steroid epoxy sulfone intermediate was detd.Except for chemicals metioned above, 7205-98-3 and 89211-08-5 are also used. .
