High-volume applications of azinphosmethyl, fenvalerate, permethrin, and phosmet for control of coneworms (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and seed bugs (Hemiptera: Coreidae and Pentatomidae) in southern pine seed orchards
High-volume applications of azinphosmethyl, fenvalerate, permethrin, and phosmet for control of coneworms (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and seed bugs (Hemiptera: Coreidae and Pentatomidae) in southern pine seed orchards. Nord, J. C.; Debarr, G. L.; Overgaard, N. A.; Neel, W. W.; Cameron, R. S.; Godbee, J. F. (Southeast. For. Exp. Stn., For. Serv., Research Triangle Park, NC, USA). J. Econ. Entomol., 77(6), 1589-95 (English) 1984. CODEN: JEENAI. ISSN: 0022-0493. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Azinphosmethyl [86-50-0], fenvalerate [51630-58-1], permethrin [52645-53-1], and phosmet [732-11-6] applied to individual trees 4-6 times at monthly intervals with high-vol. sprayers effectively controlled both coneworms, Dioryctria spp., and seed bugs, Leptoglossus corculus and Tetyra bipunctata, in loblolly, Pinus taeda, and slash pine, P. elliottii elliottii, seed orchards. Fenvalerate and permethrin applied at 0.025% (wt./wt.) reduced coneworm damage by 69-81% in Georgia and Texas; phosmet applied at 0.2-0.3% reduced damage in Georgia by 48-72%. These results equaled those with the azinphosmethyl std. applied at 0.18% (wt.). Coneworm control was not as good in Louisiana or Mississippi, apparently because of intense rains. Seed bug populations were low, but control was very good with all treatments. Mean damage to second-year ovules and seeds was 1.5-6.2% among untreated trees in 5 orchards, whereas losses in most insecticide-treated orchards were <0.2%. Other types of losses caused by seed bugs, such as conelet abortion, first-year ovule abortion, and empty seeds, were also reduced by the insecticide treatments. A decrease in seedworm, Cydia spp., damage was obsd. for some treatments.
Rapid separation of pesticides by high-performance liquid chromatography with 3-mm columns
Rapid separation of pesticides by high-performance liquid chromatography with 3-mm columns. Rice, Larry Grant (Natl. Vet. Serv. Lab., Ames, IA 50010, USA). J. Chromatogr., 317, 523-6 (English) 1984. CODEN: JOCRAM. ISSN: 0021-9673. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Section cross-reference(s): 80 A HPLC procedure was developed to quantitate the active ingredient in dipping vat samples contg. coumaphos (CoRal) [56-72-4], phosmet (Prolate) [732-11-6], crotoxyphos (Ciodrin) [7700-17-6], synthetic permethrin (Atroban) [52645-53-1], amitraz (Taktic) [33089-61-1] or chlorpyrifos (Dursban) [2921-88-2]. The procedure, based on chromatog. with a short column (30 ′ 4.6 mm) packed with 3-mm particles, allows 3 times as many samples to be analyzed per unit time as chromatog. with a conventional column (100 ′ 5.0 mm) with 5-mm particles. This increase in productivity was accomplished with normal operating conditions and std. equipment. There was also a corresponding redn. in solvent vol. Precision, calcd. from peak areas, was <1% relative std. deviation, while the min. detectable amt. of amitraz decreased from 700 to 300 pg.
