A preemergence application of I is more effective than a postemergence treatment. I has a very good action against Echinochloa crus-galli, a major grass weed in rice fields. On account of its low soly. in water, I displays optimal herbicidal activity only under flooded conditions. I is adsorbed to the top soil layers where it is taken up by germinating grass weeds mainly via the root system. Transplanted rice tolerates I very well. The herbicide can be used also in fields of direct-seeded rice where the seed is sown deeply, or when the plants have formed >2 leaves.
