The reaction order was 0.5 with respect to the initiator [(NH4)2S2O8, concn. 5 ′ 10-4-5 ′ 10-3 mol/L] and showed no degradative chain transfer on the monomer. The initial viscosity of monomer solns. had a significant effect on the rate const. of bimol. chain termination. The polymn. rate rose sharply and nonlinearly with increasing monomer concn.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Formation of the intermediate I (R = Me, Et) in chain transfer on the monomer in radical polymn. of N,N-diallyl-N,N-dimethylammonium chloride [7398-69-8] and N,N-diallyl-N,N-diethylammonium chloride [13107-00-1], and its rearrangement to the radical II, was postulated as an explanation of exptl. data indicating formation in the chain transfer of a radical more active than the allyl radical (e.g., I prior to rearrangement) and participation of this active radical in chain propagation giving a linear polymer, rather than a branched or crosslinked polymer that would be formed if I acted as a chain initiator. The presence of 1, rather than 2, terminal double bonds, and of CH3 terminal group, indicated by the 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy in the isolated polymers, supported the postulated mechanism. .
