Preemergence control of crabgrass in turf with pendimethalin
Preemergence control of crabgrass in turf with pendimethalin. Herrick, R. M.; Ilnicki, R. D. (Dep. Soils Crops, Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick, NJ 08903, USA). Proc. Annu. Meet. Northeast. Weed Sci. Soc., 39, 271-3 (English) 1985. CODEN: PNWSBF. ISSN: 0078-1703. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Three formulations of pendimethalin [40487-42-1] were evaluated in turfgrass under greenhouse and field conditions for preemergence control of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemon) and hairy crabgrass (D. sanguinalis). Turfgrass evaluated included Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis Merion), red fescue (Festuca rubra), and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Pendimethalin 4% emulsion conc. or 2.5 or 10% granules applied at 1.5 or 3.0 kg active ingredient/ha provided excellent control (97-100%) of crabgrass in both the greenhouse and field studies without injury to the turfgrasses. In comparison, bensulide [741-58-2] 4% emulsion conc. applied at 7.5 or 12.0 kg active ingredient/ha provided com. acceptable control (380%) only at the latter rate. Bensulide injured Kentucky bluegrass in the greenhouse study, but did not injure turfgrasses in the field study.
Management of preemergence herbicides for crabgrass control in transition-zone turf
Management of preemergence herbicides for crabgrass control in transition-zone turf. Dernoeden, Peter H. (Dep. Agron., Univ. Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA). HortScience, 19(3, Sect. 1), 443-5 (English) 1984. CODEN: HJHSAR. ISSN: 0018-5345. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) A single application of bensulide [741-58-2] (8.5 kg/ha) provided effective (>90%) crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum) control. Oxadiazon [19666-30-9] (4.5 kg/ha) effectively controlled crabgrass, and reducing the rate of oxadiazon to 2.2 kg/ha in the 2nd year, or reducing the rate to either 1.1 or 1.1 + 1.1 kg/ha in the 3rd year also gave excellent crabgrass control. Single and sequential applications of benefin [1861-40-1] did not provide satisfactory control in the initial year of use. Benefin applied at 2.2 + 2.2 kg/ha provided acceptable control in the 2nd year, whereas it was not until the 3rd year that a single application (2.2 kg/ha) was efficacious. The lowest effective dosage of DCPA [1861-32-1] was 8.4 + 8.4 kg/ha; however, consistently good results were provided by 11.8 + 5.9 kg/ha of DCPA. Single and sequential applications of siduron did not control crabgrass in any year.
