The cellular fatty acids of the sulfate-reducing bacteria, Desulfobacter species, Desulfobulbus species and Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Taylor, James; Parkes, R. John (Dunstaffnage Mar. Res. Lab., Scott. Mar. 544-63-8 and 7416-57-1 are cas registry numbers. These chemicals are also mentioned in this article. Biol. Assoc., Oban/Argyll PA34 4AD, UK). J. Gen. Microbiol., 129(11), 3303-9 (English) 1983. CODEN: JGMIAN. ISSN: 0022-1287. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 10 (Microbial Biochemistry) The fatty acid profiles of Desulfobacter species grown on acetate and of Desulfobulbus grown on propionate, lactate, and H plus CO2 were analyzed. Desulfobacter Grown on acetate and Desulfobulbus grown on H and CO2 gave mainly even-numbered straight-chain acids, but odd-numbered acids predominated in Desulfobulbus grown on propionate, which reflects the use of the growth substrates provided as chain initiators for fatty acid biosynthesis. The cellular fatty acids of Desulfobulbus grown on lactate were distributed approx. evenly between even and odd straight-chain acids. In contrast, those of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans were dominated by branched-chain iso and anteiso fatty acids when the cells were grown on either lactate or H plus CO2. On the basis of the fatty acid biosynthetic pathways, these sulfate-reducing bacteria could be sepd. into 2 groups: one that comprised Desulfobacter and Desulfobulbus; the other, the more primitive D. desulfuricans. .
