Ph3SCl and KPF6 failed to yield the expected product but gave in ~50% yield a cryst. compd. identified as [Ph2S-p-C6H4S-p-C6H4SPh2]2+.2PF6- (I) [74227-35-3]. Its identification is based on elemental and spectral analyses. I was also prepd. by reaction of C6H6 with S2Cl2 in the presence of AlCl3 and Cl followed by addn. of KPF6. The product is an effective photonitiator for the crosslinking of epoxy resins, as evidenced by the radiation-induced cure rate of 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexanoate.

Thus, 4.1 g Ph2SO was dissolved in concd. H2SO4, treated with 1.8 g Ph2S, and the mixt. was poured into aq. KPF6 to give 7.6 g bis-[4-(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl] sulfide bis(hexafluorophosphate) with 98% purity. .
