DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 38 (Plastics Fabrication and Uses) A UV-resistant polycarbonate article having good abrasion, mar, scratch, and chem. solvent resistance comprises a polycarbonate article with its surface layers impregnated with a UV radiation-absorbing compd. and having at least 1 surface coated with an adhesion-promoting acrylic primer and a top coat of colloidal silica-filled thermoset siloxane. Thus, polycarbonate panels were impregnated by flow-coating with a UV radiation-stabilizing compn. comprising a 1% soln. of Cyasorb UV 1988 [7443-25-6] in butoxyethanol, draining <1 min, and heating 5 min at 125°. The stabilized panels were primed by flow-coating with an emulsion compn. of Rhoplex AC 658 [64925-70-8] contg. 10% acrylic solids, draining 15 min, and heating 1 h at 125° to cure the thermoset acrylic. A colloidal silica-filled thermoset siloxane top coat was applied on the primed panels by flow-coating, draining 30 min, and baking 1 h at 125° to cure the siloxane to the thermoset stage. The coated panels had good initial adhesion, as well as good adhesion, both after 323 h exposure to a sunlamp and after 329 h exposure to an accelerated weathering device.
