DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Methylene chloride [75-09-2] (80-800 .mu.mol/kg) was administered to rats by vaporization in a closed rebreathing system. The rate of CO [630-08-0] prodn. was measured and the total amt. of CO formed in excess of the endogenous amt. was calcd. Addn. of CH2Cl2 to the gas phase caused an initial increase in CO prodn. to about 35 times the endogenous rate at all doses given. The total amt. of CO formed when all CH2Cl2 was metabolized depended on the dose given, amounting to about 0.48 mol of CO/mol of CH2Cl2 administered. All dihalogenated methanes caused an increase in CO prodn. and a decrease in methane [74-82-8] prodn. At 100 .mu.mol/kg the order of decreasing effect on both the initial prodn. rate and the final amt. of CO accumulated was CH2Br2 [74-95-3] >CH2Cl2 >CH2BrCl [74-97-5] >CH2I2 [75-11-6]. Methane prodn. by the intestinal bacteria was inhibited in the order CH2BrCl >CH2Br2 >CH2Cl2 >CH2I2. The CO prodn. of germ-free rats was increased by CH2Cl2 to the same extent as with controls. The data suggest that a low dose of dihalogenated methane causes substrate satn. of the enzyme system involved in CO prodn. Large doses of CH2Cl2 caused a progressive increase in the rate of CO prodn. over several h. Such results suggested that substrate-induced enzyme formation occurs when the concn. of CH2Cl2 is maintained.

The products of these reactions, i.e., C1 and C4 alkanes and alkenes, suggested that the bond could be formed by the insertion of CH2 radicals. An interesting phenomenon, where the carbon no. of products increased with the duration of reaction period, was found. The role of U in the Fischer-Tropsch process was studied. H and CO were catalyzed to CH4 [74-82-8] (60-70%), MeOH [67-56-1] (20-25%), EtOH [64-17-5] and CH3OCH2OCH3 [109-87-5] at atm. pressure and 250°.In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 10405-34-2 and 64-17-5 The Fischer-Tropsch process could proceed through U alkoxide intermediates. This oxide-formation mechanism was tested by the pyrolysis of U alkoxides. .
