- Alkoxysilane double cluster compounds with silicone bridges. Knollmueller, Karl O. (Olin Corp., USA). U.S. US 4058546 15 Nov 1977, 8 pp. (English). (United States of America). CODEN: USXXAM. CLASS: IC: C07F007-04. NCL: 260448800R. APPLICATION: US 77-791671 28 Apr 1977. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 51 (Fossil Fuels, Derivatives, and Related Products) Section cross-reference(s): 29 The title compds. of the general formula [(RO)3SiO]2SiR1(OSiR2R3)nOSiR1[OSi(OR)3]2 [I; R = alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, and aralkyl; R1 = H, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, or OSi(OR)3; R2 and R3 = H, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, and halo- or cyano-substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, and aralkyl; n = 1-301] are useful as hydraulic fluids and heat-transfer fluids and are prepd. by reacting an alkoxysilanol cluster compd. [e.g., [(sec-BuO)3SiO]2SiMeOH (II) [60711-46-8]] with a dihalo Si bridging compd. [e.g., SiMe2Cl2 (III) [75-78-5]] in the presence of a base as H halide acceptor. Thus, a mixt. of 154.9 g I, 29.2 g pyridine, and 400 mL heptane was stirred at -5° under N, and a soln. of 17.06 g II in 80 mL heptane was added dropwise. The product was heated 12 h at 70°, cooled, water washed, dried, and fractionated. The desired product [I (R = sec-Bu, R1 = R2 = R3 = Me, n = 1) [65618-20-4]] b. 255 ± 3°/0.05 mm was obtained in 59.5% yield, and its usefulness as a functional fluid was shown by tests for viscosity, flash point, wt. loss, 4-ball wear scar, and hydrolytic stability.

- Interfacial free energies of binary mixtures of homopolymers on poly(tetrafluoroethylene) and on silanized glass. Calderon, H. S.; St.-Pierre, L. E. (Dep. Chem., McGill Univ., Montreal, Que., Can.). J. Colloid Interface Sci., 63(3), 399-409 (English) 1978. CODEN: JCISA5. ISSN: 0021-9797. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 66 The solid/liq. interfacial surface tensions on PTFE [9002-84-0] and on glass treated with Me2SiCl2 [75-78-5] were calcd. from the adhesion tensions which were measured as a function of compn. for 3 binary mixts. of polyethers, a polyether-H2O soln., and a polydimethylsiloxane-Tetralin [119-64-2] soln., and the results were in good agreement with those calcd. using the Prigogine theory. Replacement of the gas phase by a low-energy solid did not result in any substantial reorganization of the polar mixts. at the interface.
