After an induction period of 2-7 days birefringent whiskers, which developed into spherulites within 48 h, were obsd. The size of spherulites depended mainly on I concn. and not on mol. wt. DSC thermograms of the spherulite suspensions displayed a broad endotherm with the onset at ~35°. The centrifuged spherulites had a similar endotherm except for a broader peak and greater latent heat (5.5 vs. 4.5 cal/g). Drying of the spherulite material, after washing, resulted in formation of cellulose II. .
