Tenuazonic acid produced by an Alternaria alternata isolate from Beta vulgaris
Tenuazonic acid produced by an Alternaria alternata isolate from Beta vulgaris. Robeson, David J.; Jalal, Mahbubul A. F. (Natl. Prod. Chem. Cell Biol. Group, Plant Cell Res. Inst., Inc., Dublin, CA, USA). J. Inorg. Biochem., 44(2), 109-16 (English) 1991. CODEN: JIBIDJ.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 138169-40-1 and 75652-74-3 may be metioned in this study. ISSN: 0162-0134. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 10 (Microbial, Algal, and Fungal Biochemistry) A toxigenic fungus was isolated from leaves of field-grown sugar beets and identified as A. alternata. This isolate (LS-2) is typical of the A. alternata species complex from the morphol. standpoint. LS-2 produced abundant quantities (~150 mg/L) of tenuazonic acid. This metabolite exhibited toxicity to cell cultures of B. vulgaris in the 10-5M range. A simple procedure was developed for the isolation and quantification of the toxin based on its chelation of Fe3+. Tenuazonic acid was isolated from the fungus as the Na complex form. A UV and NMR spectroscopic comparison was drawn of the Na complex and the free acid forms. .
