Although alkyl ethers with tert-Bu groups in their mols. showed very poor biodegradability, tert-Bu Me ether (MTBE) [1634-04-4] had no effect on the biodegradability of gasoline blended with it. MTBE-blended gasoline had an excellent biodegradability and caused no environmental pollution. The bioconcn. factor in fish was detd. 108-20-3 and 32970-45-9 which are cas registry numbers are also used here. by the cultivation of Japanese carp in a flowing water system contg. alkyl ethers over a period of 4 wks. Alkyl ethers used in this bioconcn. expt. were 2-(tert-butoxy)ethanol [7580-85-0], MTBE, and tert-Bu iso-Pr ether [17348-59-3]. The bioconcn. factors of these ethers were 0.6, 1.5, and 5.7, resp. The MTBE was readily excreted by carp when the fish were transfered to freshwater. The bioconcn. factors of water-sol. chems. such as alkyl ethers used in this expt., can be predicted from their partition coeffs. in an 1-octanol-water system. .
