The herbicides used were butylate [2008-41-5], EPTC [759-94-4], chlorpropham [101-21-3], propham [122-42-9], diuron [330-54-1], linuron [330-55-2], monuron [150-68-5], siduron [1982-49-6], alachlor [15972-60-8], trifluralin [1582-09-8], 2,4-D amine [2008-39-1], 2,4-D ester [1929-73-3], atrazine [1912-24-9], cyanazine [21725-46-2], metribuzin [21087-64-9], simazine [122-34-9], dalapon [75-99-0], chloramben [133-90-4], dicamba [1918-00-9], and dinoseb [88-85-7]. None of the herbicides studied significantly affected denitrification of nitrate when applied at the rate of 10 mg/g soil, but dinoseb increased the ratio of N2 to N2O in the gaseous products of denitrification when applied at this rate. Butylate, EPTC, diuron, simazine, and dalapon had no significant effect on denitrification when applied at the rate of 50 mg/g soil, whereas metribuzin and dinoseb enhanced denitrification when applied at this rate. The influence of the other herbicides on denitrification when applied at the rate of 50 mg/g soil depended on the soil, but all enhanced or inhibited denitrification in at least one soil.

Thus, a compn. contg. benefin + butylate (1:3.3; at 3.3 L/ha) totally controlled Eschinochloa crus-galli and Setaria glauca, with no phytotoxicity to bean, whereas the components by themselves were much less active.
