Higher alkylsilanes are also nitrated, but the reactions are followed by HNO2 elimination. The method represents the 1st successful nitrodesilylations at satd. C. Allylsilanes react cleanly with NO2+ BF4- in CH2Cl2 to give nitropropenes in good-to-excellent yield via initial attack by NO2+ on the allylic p-system, followed by F--facilitated trimethylsilyl elimination and not direct desilylative nitration at satd. C. MeCH:CHCH2SiMe3 gives CH2:CHCHMeNO2 exclusively, and not the primary direct nitrodesilylation product, MeCH:CHCH2NO2. .
