DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Upon oral absorption, sultamicillin [76497-13-7] is completely hydrolyzed to equimolar proportions of sulbactam [68373-14-8] and ampicillin [69-53-4], thereby acting as an efficient mutual prodrug. In rats, sultamicillin delivered 2 to 2.5 times greater total bioavailability for ampicillin and sulbactam than when each was used individually. Actual plasma or serum concns. (measured in mg/mL) of ampicillin and sulbactam produced by sultamicillin were generally equiv. in rats, mice, and dogs. Further studies also indicated that the components of sultamicilin were widely distributed in the various tissues of rats. Thus, sultamicillin might be an effective agent against a variety of infections produced by both b-lactamase-resistant and b-lactamase-susceptible microorganisms.
