- Fumigation of Caribbean fruit fly (Diptera:Tephritidae) larvae with cyclopropyl compounds inhibits adult emergence. Carroll, J. F. (Livestock Insects Lab., Agric. Res. Serv., Beltsville, MD 20705, USA). J. Econ. Entomol., 77(4), 980-3 (English) 1984. CODEN: JEENAI. ISSN: 0022-0493. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Anastrepha suspensa Larvae were fumigated with the cyclopropyl compds. Me cyclopropanecarboxylate [2868-37-3], cyclopropyl Me ketone [765-43-5], and cyclopropyl Me carbinol [765-42-4]. Larvae were exposed for 24 h to rates ranging from 1.1 to 21.4 mg/L. Typically, fumigated larvae grew and formed puparia, but adults did not emerge. At lower rates adults often only partially eclosed; however, <5% fully escaped from their puparia. Mortality of A. suspensa was 100% with exposures to 2.2 mg/L of Me cyclopropanecarboxylate, 10.7 mg/L of cyclopropyl Me ketone and 21.4 mg/L of cyclopropyl Me carbinol. Dissection of puparia revealed that insects fumigated with Me cyclopropanecarboxylate died at various phases of development; 7% of these specimens were headless pupae.

Frostling, Harald; Hoff, Ariel; Jacobsson, Sven; Pfaeffli, Pirkko; Vainiotalo, Sinikka; Zitting, Antti (Swed. Employers' Confederat., Stockholm S-103 30, Swed.). Scand. J. Work, Environ. Health, 10(3), 163-9 (English) 1984. CODEN: SWEHDO. ISSN: 0355-3140. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Section cross-reference(s): 38 Thermooxidative degrdn. of polypropylene at close to the industrial processing temps. was studied with thermogravimetric anal, IR spectroscopy, and gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). GC-MS allowed the identification of 47 volatile degrdn. products. Formaldehyde [765-43-5], acetaldehyde [75-07-0], a-methylacrolein [78-85-3], acetic acid [64-19-7], and acetone [67-64-1] were the major products. Antioxidants markedly slowed down the degrdn. of polypropylene and the evolution of the degrdn. products. The relative amts. of the oxidized products were mostly independent of the degrdn. temp. or the type of antioxidant. Measurements in the plastics industry revealed low airborne concns. of individual volatile products. The concn. 4160-75-2 which is the cas registry number is also used here. of aerosols, which IR anal. showed to resemble paraffin fumes, was significant and probably the most important hygienic hazard. The biochem. parameters (the consumption of protecting sulfhydryl groups and the effects on foreign compd. metab.) indicated that the degrdn. products are biol. reactive, affecting the balance of normal metab. in exposed animals. .
