The rate of polymn. of PhC.tplbond.CH [536-74-3] and p-MeC6H4C.tplbond.CH [766-97-2] increased with decreasing solvent polarity whereas the opposite occurred for p-ClC6H4C.tplbond.CH [873-73-4]. Addn. of Ph4Sn [595-90-4] to a reaction mixt. contg. PhC.tplbond.CH and WCl6 increased the polymn. rate. The reaction const. (.rho.+) for the copolymn. of PhC.tplbond.CH with its ring-substituted derivs. was the same for both WCl6- and WCl6-Ph4Sn-catalyzed reactions. The propagtion proceded by [2 + 2] cycloaddn. of PhC.tplbond.CH to giant-ring polymer with subsequent cleavage of the cyclobutene intermediate on the transition metal. The cis configuration contents of poly(phenylacetylene) and poly(p-methylphenylacetylene) were high when prepd. with an MoCl5-contg. catalyst than when a WCl6-contg. catalyzt was used. The microstructures of the polymers were interpreted on the basis of the Woodward-Hoffmann rules.
