The Sodium fluoride, also known as Alcoa sodium fluoride, is the inorganic compound with the formula NaF. Its EINECS registry number is 231-667-8. With the CAS registry number 7681-49-4, it is a colorless solid. Sodium fluoride is soluble in potassium hydroxide and fluorides, soluble in water 0.25 g/L at 20 °C but insoluble in organic solvents.
Physical properties of Sodium fluoride are: (1)H-Bond Donor: 0; (2)H-Bond Acceptor: 1; (3)Rotatable Bond Count: 0; (4)Exact Mass: 41.988173; (5)MonoIsotopic Mass: 41.988173; (6)Topological Polar Surface Area: 0; (7)Heavy Atom Count: 2; (8)Formal Charge: 0; (9)Complexity: 2; (10)Covalently-Bonded Unit Count: 2.
Preparation of Sodium fluoride: Sodium fluoride can be prepared by neutralizing hydrofluoric acid or hexafluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6), byproducts of the production of superphosphate fertilizer. Neutralizing agents include sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. Alcohols are sometimes used to precipitate the NaF:
HF + NaOH → NaF + H2O
In addition, Sodium fluoride can also be produced by reaction of hydrofluoric acid, hydrated alumina, and sodium carbonate. It is commonly produced by mixing sodium aluminate soln with liquid or gaseous hydrogen fluoride. Normally manufactured by the reaction of hydrofluoric acid with soda ash or caustic soda, with control of pH essential and proper agitation necessary to obtain the desired crystal size.
Uses of Sodium fluoride: Fluoride salts are used to enhance the strength of teeth by the formation of fluorapatite, a naturally occurring component of tooth enamel. sodium fluoride is used as a cleaning agent, e.g. as a "laundry scour". Like other fluorides, Sodium fluoride finds use in desilylation in organic synthesis. The fluoride is the reagent for the synthesis of fluorocarbons. In medical imaging, fluorine-18-labelled Sodium fluoride is used in positron emission tomography (PET).
When you are using this chemical, please be cautious about it as the following:
Sodium fluoride is toxic if swallowed and is irritating to eyes and skin. You should not breathe its dust and its gas/fumes/vapour/spray (appropriate wording to be specified by the manufacturer). What's more, you must avoid contact with skin and eyes. Whenever you will contact it, you should wear suitable protective clothing. In case of accident or if you feel unwell seek medical advice immediately (show the label where possible).
