Mokuzai Gakkaishi, 32(9), 720-3 (Japanese) 1986. CODEN: MKZGA7. ISSN: 0021-4795. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) Section cross-reference(s): 11 The cause of termite activity in the wood of S. verticillata belonging to the family Taxodiaceae was examd. The termite-active fraction of the wood was sepd. in parallel with a termite test. The termiticidal substances of the wood were present in the n-hexane solubles of the steam distillates of the wood meal. The hexane solubles were fractionated in the usual way into acids, phenols, and neutrals. The neutrals were dissolved in MeOH which was cooled at 0-8°. A cryst. compd. was sepd. from the oily residue. The latter on an alumina column was eluted with various solvents having different polarities to afford six fractions, F-1-6. Among them, the most active fraction was found to be F-3 from which isoeugenol mono-Me ether [93-16-3] was isolated and confirmed as the active compd. in a yield of 0.21% of wood. A cryst. compd. having comparatively less activity was identified as cedrol [77-53-2], the yield of which was 0.6% of wood. The two compds. accounted for the entire termite activity of the wood.

- Investigation of Juniperus species of the United States for new sources of cedarwood oil. Adams, Robert P. (Bio-Renewables Inst., Baylor Univ., Waco, TX 76798, USA). Econ. Bot., 41(1), 48-54 (English) 1987. CODEN: ECBOA5. ISSN: 0013-0001. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 62 (Essential Oils and Cosmetics) Section cross-reference(s): 1 Eleven Juniperus species were studied to det. their yields of cedarwood oil and the major components of com. interest: a-cedrene [469-61-4], b-cedrene [546-28-1], thujopsene [470-40-6], cuparene [16982-00-6], cedrol [77-53-2], and widdrol [6892-80-4]. 6892-80-4 and 16982-00-6 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. Besides the 2 species currently being used (J. ashei, and J. virginiana), the highest oil yields were obtained from J. erythrocarpa and J. scopulorum (4.07 and 2.71%, resp.,). .
