DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 75 (Crystallography and Liquid Crystals) Precision total neutron cross section measurements of ZrH1.58 were performed using a highly monochromatic 0.035-1.1-eV neutron beam. The exptl. values of the cross section in the region of the 1-phonon optical peak (0.100 eV < En < 0.250 eV) compared well with calcns. assuming that the phonon spectrum, g(e), is represented by 3 Gaussians centered at 0.132, 0.137, and 0.151 eV, with assocd. widths of 0.05, 0.02, and 0.01 eV, resp. The phonon spectrum g(e) departs from the calcns. as exemplified by the central force model of ZrH2. Such departures may arise due to noncentral forces and tetragonality. The structure of g(e) in some respects is similar to that obsd. in inelastic neutron scattering cross section measurements. .
