Floatability of the coals and their components were measured in the Hallimond app. using naphtha, diacetone alc. (I) [123-42-2], 1-naphthaleneethyl alc. (II) [773-99-9], 1-naphthaleneacetic acid [86-87-3], and 1-naphthalenesulfonic acid (III) [85-47-2] as floatation agents. Floatability decreased in the sequence fusain > vitrain > durain. The highest yield of concs. was achieved for naphtha and II, the lowest for III. The concs. of max. enrichment in vitrinite, inertinite, and exinite were obtained when II, III, and naphtha, I, or II were applied, resp. In the presence of III high yields of exinite were found in the bottom fractions.

The flotation activity of the reagents increase in the order 1-naphthalenesulfonic acid [85-47-2] < 1-naphthaleneacetic acid [86-87-3] < diacetone alc. [123-42-2] < 1-naphthaleneethanol [773-99-9]. Exinite has the lowest floatability in all expts. With acid-contg. reagents, inertinite has the highest floatability; with OH-contg. reagents, inertinite has a higher flotability than vitrinite, although differences are small at higher reagent concn. Results are discussed in relation to to the surface properties of the macerals.
