K silicate [1312-76-1] (K2O 9, SiO2 20, H2O 71%). Concns. of 0.01-1% were tested in solns. contg. 33% NaOH, 20% NH4NO3, and N NaCO3 + N NaHCO3. Range in NaOH and Na2CO3-NaHCO3 solns. and at -175 mV (Cu-CuSO4) in a NH4NO3 soln. These solns. were chosen because field and lab. tests have shown that stress-corrosion cracking of buried pipelines is caused .gtoreq.1 of these chem. in the environment. Liqs. contg. CO3, HCO3, OH, Cl, and/or NO3 ions were found under coatings near stress corrosion cracks in pipelines buried in 4 different states of the US. In general, the best results were obtained with 1% Ca(H2PO4)2.H2O and Na5P3O10 solns. Inhibiting compns. for coating pipelines were prepd. by blending 20% of each of the inhibitors with a coal tar primer, but the K silicate compn. formed a gel that did not harden. Teaching times and failure times were detd. for each compn. Other methods of application involve incorporation into asphalt and epoxy resins. In coal tar and these media, baking would be required, hence coated specimens were baked at 500.degree.F for 1 hr. The results indicated that Na5P3O10 was least likely to be affected by baking. .
