The measurements are described of d., volumetric thermal expansion coeffs., and viscosity of borax [61028-24-8] and Na metaborate [7775-19-1], pure and with various percentages of dissolved UO2. The d. of these molten salts was measured with the buoyancy method in the temp. range 850-1300°, while the viscosity was measured in the temp. range 700-1250° with a Haake viscosity balance. Simulation expts. with low m.p. materials were performed to investigate the ratio of the downward to sideward melt velocity. This ratio was 0.34 for a solid to liq. d. ratio r* = 1.66. For the real borax core-catcher r* = 4 and this would correspond to a velocity ratio of ~1.
