- Microbiological oxidation of ferrous sulfate
- Microbiological oxidation of ferrous sulfate. Birkett, Herbert George (Laporte Australia Ltd., Aust.). Australian AU 484475 23 Jun 1977, 13 pp. (English). (Australia). CODEN: ALXXAP. CLASS: IC: C12D013-00. APPLICATION: AU 73-53817 27 Mar 1972. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 16 (Fermentations) Ferrous salts, particularly waste ferrous sulfate from TiO2 pigment manuf., are oxidized with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Thus, a rubber-lined 900 L steel tank was filled with FeSO4.cntdot.7H2O-nutrient broth. The broth was aerated, stirred, and kept at 35.degree.. As the reaction proceeded, FeSO4.cntdot.7H2O [7782-63-0] was added at a rate sufficient to maintain Fe2+ concn. at 2 g/L. Over 200 h time 520 kg FeSO4.cntdot.7H2O was oxidized. The reaction mixt. was pumped continuously into a settling tank from which a clear overflow returned to the fermentor. The pptd. solid was thus continuously removed from the system. The products were 990 L of soln. contg. 78 g Fe3+/L and a solid ppt. contg. a hydrated basic ferric sulfate.
- Wastewater treatment
- Wastewater treatment. (Toa Gosei Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Japan). Jpn. Tokkyo Koho JP 58034197 B4 25 Jul 1983 Showa, 5 pp. (Japanese). (Japan). CODEN: JAXXAD. CLASS: IC: C02F001-72. APPLICATION: JP 75-130544 31 Oct 1975. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 60 (Waste Treatment and Disposal) Oxidable substance in wastewater with biol./flocculation-sedimentation pretreatments are oxidized at pH 10 by H2O2 (at a quantity 0.2-3 times the COD value) in the presence of Fe sulfates as catalyst at 1-500 mg Fe/L wastewater. For Fe recovery the oxidn.-treated wastewater is adjusted to pH 5-9 by alkali addn. to ppt. dissolved Fe as Fe hydroxides for sepn. The sludge contg. sepd. 7782-63-0 which is the cas registry number of some chemical is mentioned. Fe hydroxides is dissolved with H2SO4 at pH 1-2 for recycling as the Fe salt catalyst. Thus, a 2-L wastewater contg. polyvinyl alc. [7782-63-0] with COD 103 ppm is treated with 1.0 mL 35% H2O2 and 1.0 g FeSO4.7H2O; the Fe salt recovery is 97%. .
