Hydrophobicity is imparted to the coating by the addn. of a gaseous, organosilicon compd. to the vaporized Si or SiO2. Suitable organosilicon compds. have at least one hydrophobic substituent, (alkyl, alkylene, aryl groups bound to Si) and a reactive constituent (alkoxy, acyloxy, amino, amido, amonoxy, oxime, halide, H) also attached to a Si atom. Representative compds. include vinyltriethoxysilane [78-08-0], vinyl(methoxyethoxy)silane [24520-53-4], methyltriethoxysilane [2031-67-6] and dimethyldiethoxysilane [78-62-6]. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 36 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Particles of an inorg. silicate were made hydrophobic by treatment with an organosilane and used with siloxanes to prep. aq. emulsions which were useful as release coatings on molds for rubbers and plastics. Thus, muscovite particles (325 mesh) were treated with (EtO)2SiMe2 [78-62-6] and used (350 parts) with 462.1 parts aq. siloxane emulsion to prep. and stable dispersion which was sprayed on molds to give a smooth, uniform coating. Dispersions contg. untreated muscovite particles gave rough coatings contg. agglomerated particles.
