DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Cyclic or linear polysilanes are heated in an inert gas to polymerize in such a way that the gaseous products are trapped in good solvents of polysilanes at temps. much higher than room temp. Thus, 100 g poly(dichlorodimethylsilane) [30107-43-8] (prepd. by polymn. of Me2SiCl2 in boiling xylene in the presence of Na) was placed in a flask, heated in a salt bath at 390-400° in a current of 25 mL/min N.Several reagents such as 30107-43-8 is used here. The gaseous product carried by N was trapped by 200 ML boiling xylene. After 6 h of reaction the product in the reactor was dissolved in 200 mL xylene and pptd. with 2 L MeOH to give 54 g polymer having av. mol. wt. 1913, and 2 g polymer having av. mol. wt. 394 was recovered by evapn. of the solvent. The xylene soln. in the trap was evapd. to give 1 g polymer having av. mol. wt. 1880. When the trap was omitted, a similar run gave 3 and 2 g polymer of av. mol. wt. 1239 and 394, resp. .
