DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 59 (Air Pollution and Industrial Hygiene) Section cross-reference(s): 42 Org. solvent products used in the various factories were collected nationwide in Japan, and analyzed by gas chromatog. Of the 1179 samples collected, 522 samples were homogeneous (including 321 thinners, 145 degreasers, and 56 reagents and others), and were analyzed by means of direct injection into a flame ionization detection-gas chromatog. with 2 capillary columns. In thinners (n = 248), the av. no. of solvent components per sample was 4.14 when the thinners contg. gasoline were excluded. PhMe was the most popular component in thinners (present in 56%) followed by EtOAc, MeOH, xylene, PhEt, iso-BuOH, ethyleneglycol monoethylether acetate, BuOAc, and MIBK. Gasoline was also detected in 23%. In degreasers (n = 123), the av. no. of solvent components per sample was 1.64 when the degreasers contg. gasoline were not taken into account. C2HCl3 [79-01-6] was present in 21% of degreasers followed by C2Cl4 [127-18-4], 1,1,1-trichloroethane [71-55-6], PhMe, Me2CO [67-64-1], xylenes and PhEt. Gasoline was found in 14%. A small amt. of 1,4-dioxane was detected as an additive in every 1,1,1-trichloroethane product. With regard to reagents and others (n = 53), the av. no. of components per sample was 1.In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 75-05-8 and 127-18-4 40 if samples contg. gasoline were excluded, and most (73%) of reagents and other (n = 41) consisted of a single component. The potent toxic solvents such as C6H6 [71-43-2], CHCl3 [67-66-3], CCl4 [56-23-5], 1,2-dichloroethane [107-06-2], 1,1,2-trichloroethane [79-00-5], 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane [79-34-5], and CS2 were rarely found in homogeneous products. It is important from the viewpoint of occupational health that every component of org. solvents used in industry should be indicated and that the popular solvents should be kept under careful control to prevent chronic poisoning. .

Thus, a (vol.) mixt. of II and N was passed through a catalyst layer (10 parts 1:1 M mixt. of tetraphenylporphine [917-23-7] and CsCl supported by 90 parts colloidal silica) at 300° and 500 h-1 to convert 12.0% II to I 86.5, trans-1,2-dichloroethylene 6.7, and cis-1,2-dichloroethylene 6.8 mol. %. .
