ISSN: 0023-1134. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The effects of the water-alc. (33%) ext. of Eleutherococcus, its water-sol. ext. (sepd. using polymeric solubilizers), and of pure eleutheroside B (I) [118-34-3] and D (II) [79484-75-6] on protein biosynthesis were studied in cell-free rat liver microsomal and polyribosomal systems. The alc. ext. concn.-dependently inhibited protein synthesis in liver microsomal systems to a greater extent than in polyribosomal systems. The water ext. had less inhibitory activity. I and II inhibited protein synthesis 10-20 times more than did the alc. ext., when the inhibition was expressed per unit wt. of drug. Apparently, the inhibitory effects of Eleutherococcus ext. on protein synthesis are due to glycosides, particularly I and II.
