DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 9 (Biochemical Methods) Section cross-reference(s): 73, 79 A fiber optic probe for measuring pO2 is described that is based on fluorescence quenching and consists of two 250-mm strands of plastic optical fiber ending in a section of porous polymer tubing ~3 mm long and 0.6 mm in diam. The tubing is packed with dye on an adsorptive support. The general construction is similar to a pH probe which has previously been reported (Peterson, J. I. et al., 1980; Goldstein, S. R. et al., 1980). The development required the soln. of 3 major problems not encountered before in application of this principle: (1) a dye was needed with the combined properties of suitable O quench sensitivity, excitation by visible light, and resistance to fading; perylene dibutyrate (solvent green 5, CI 59075) was selected; (2) a hydrophobic, high-O-permeability polypropylene envelope was necessary; and (3) an adsorptive support (Amberlite XAD 4) was required which activated the dye without sensitivity to humidity.Except for chemicals metioned above, 9003-07-0 and 79869-59-3 are also used. This design provides a small-size, low-cost probe suitable for tissue and blood vessel implantation. .
