- Rapid separation of soft drinks ingredients using high performance liquid chromatography. Williams, M. L. (Cent. Qual. Control, Britvic Soft Drinks Ltd., Chelmsford/Essex CM1 1TU, UK). Food Chem., 22(3), 235-44 (English) 1986. CODEN: FOCHDJ. ISSN: 0308-8146. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Food and Feed Chemistry) A method is described which uses high performance liq. chromatog. in the reverse phase mode to sep. amaranth [915-67-3], quinoline yellow [8004-92-0], quinine sulfate [804-63-7], sunset yellow [2783-94-0], caffeine [58-08-2], aspartame [22839-47-0], saccharin [81-07-2], vanillin [121-33-5], sorbic acid [110-44-1], benzoic acid [65-85-0] and green S [3087-16-9] in 4 min in samples of soft drinks. The final sepn. was achieved using 17.5% acetonitrile, 12.5% methanol, 70% buffer (0.85% H2SO4 and 17.5% mM potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate in water with the pH adjusted to 1.8), with a flow rate of 1.35 mL/min through a 100 mm ′ 4.6 mm column contg. 3 mm Spherisorb octylsilane. The octylsilane material is fully capped with monolayer coverage and a carbon loading of 6%, pore diam. of 8 nm and a surface area of 220 m2/g. This material was used in preference to the more widely used octadecylsilane as it provides shorter anal. time and allows for the use of more polar eluting solvents. Detection was at 220 nm, 0.1 AUFSD with an injection of 5 mL samples using a rotary injection valve. The std. soln. concn. was 100 mg/L for aspartame; 20 mg/L for quinine sulfate, caffeine, vanillin, sorbic acid and benzoic acid and 5 mg/L for amaranth, quinoline yellow, sunset yellow, green S, tartrazine, indigo carmine and carmoisine.
- Human maximization testing of D & C Yellow No
- Human maximization testing of D & C Yellow No. 10 and Yellow No. 11. Kita, Seiichi; Kobayashi, Toshiaki; Kutsuna, Hiroshi; Kligman, Albert M. (Shiseido Lab., Yokohama, Japan). Contact Dermatitis, 11(4), 210-13 (English) 1984. CODEN: CODEDG. ISSN: 0105-1873. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 62 (Essential Oils and Cosmetics) Section cross-reference(s): 4, 63 In a maximization test with 0.5% D & C Yellow No. 11 [8003-22-3] in petrolatum 15 or 20 human volunteers became contact sensitized. All reacted to a challenge concn. of 1000 pm and 1 down to 1 ppm. The high allergic potential of this dye was confirmed. There were no cross reactions to purified samples of D & C Yellow No. 10 [8004-92-0] or to any of its sulfonated components. In contrast, 5% solns. of pure D & C Yellow No. 10 failed to sensitize human subjects.
