- Promotion of liver carcinogenesis. Interactions of barbiturates and a choline-deficient diet. Shinozuka, H.; Demetris, A. J.; Katyal, S. L.; Perera, M. I. R. (Sch. Med., Univ. Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15261, USA). ACS Symp. Ser., 277(Xenobiot. Metab.: Nutr. Eff.), 327-36 (English) 1985. CODEN: ACSMC8. ISSN: 0097-6156. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Section cross-reference(s): 1, 18 The effect of fat quality modification in a choline [62-49-7]-deficient (CD) diet on the promoting effect and the diet-induced lipid peroxidn. in the liver was examd. Feeding a CD diet for 1 wk induced lipid peroxidn. of liver microsomal membrane lipids as detd. by diene conjugate formation. A CD diet with corn oil as the source of fat exerted a stronger promoting effect and induced lipid peroxidn. earlier and more intensely than did a CD diet contg. Primex [8041-44-9] and corn oil. Dietary administration of phenobarbital [50-06-6] in a choline-supplemented diet induced no lipid peroxidn. and no evidence of enhanced lipid peroxidn. was noted when phenobarbital was added to a CD diet. Thus, a CD diet and barbiturates exert their promoting effects through different mechanisms and the combination results in a synergistic enhancement.
