DOCUMENT TYPE: Report CA Section: 76 (Electric Phenomena) The threshold switching properties of the amorphous semiconductor As15Te70Ge15 and the organic semiconductor melanin were examd. by threshold switching expts. Measurements of delay time, energy, and av. resistance as functions of applied voltage were made by a computer-controlled data-acquisition system. These measurements were made on As15Te70Ge15 at 243, 273 and 298 K. A time dependent electrothermal model was solved numerically. The material parameters that were measured for this model are activation energy, sample thickness, cond. at T equal to infinity, and area of the electrodes. With these measured parameters the calcn.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 13494-80-9 and 8049-97-6 may be metioned in this study. was compared to the exptl. values of delay time, energy, and av. resistance as functions of applied voltage. The measured data and the calcns. agree well. Melanin was prepd. from a lyophilized powder into a hydrated pellet. The melanin pellets were studied at 298, 190, and 77 K with a double pulse app. Time-dependent current-voltage characteristics were also measured. Melanin exhibits threshold switching at low elec. fields (.apprx.102 V/cm). According to the results from the melanin expts., threshold switching in melanin can be explained by a thermal runaway model. A pseudo-memory effect was also found in melanin. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 13 (Mammalian Biochemistry) Hamster melanoma cells (RPMI 3460) were examd. for their ability to utilize phenylalanine for melanin biosynthesis. There was a small but significant incorporation of L-phenylalanine-U-14C into hot acid-insol. cellular material in the presence of cycloheximide. However, this radioactivity was removable from the acid-insol. fraction by pronase digestion. A similar percentage of L-leucine-U-14C incorporation was likewise resistant to cycloheximide inhibition. Residual protein synthesis was apparently responsible for the incorporation of both amino acids. Cycloheximide did not inhibit melanin synthesis. Thus, mammalian melanocytes do not use phenylalanine for melanin synthesis. Phenylalanine is not incorporated directly into melanin, nor do the cells appear to convert it to tyrosine via a phenylalanine hydroxylase. .
