DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Food and Feed Chemistry) Synthetic dyes used in food processings were detd. by silica gel TLC and paper chromatog. using EtOAc-MeOH-28% NH4OH (3:1:1) and BuOH-EtOH-1% NH4OH (6:2:3) as the mobile phase, resp. When 7 commonly used food dyes were applied on the silica gel thin-layer and developed with the above solvent system, the dyes appeared in the order of naphthol yellow [846-70-8], orange yellow S [2783-94-0], indigo [482-89-3], carmine [1390-65-4], amaranth [915-67-3], tartrazine [1934-21-0], and brilliant blue [2650-18-2] with corresponding Rf values of 0.80, 0.60, 0.47, 0.25, 0.20, 0.17, and 0.15, resp. When these dyes were sepd. on paper chromatog. and developed with the above solvent system, the dyes appeared in the order of naphthol yellow, orange yellow S, carmine, indigo, amaranth, tartrazine, and brilliant blue with Rf values of 0.62, 0.51, 0.33, 0,33, 0.24, 0.21, and 0.12, resp. The min. detectable amt. by these methods was 0.05 mg. A linear concn.-dependent relation was obsd. in the range of 0.1-0.5 mg, and the av. recovery for 200 mg of the dyes was in the range from 90% (indigo) to 99% (brilliant blue). These TLC and paper chromatog. systems were used to det. synthetic dye contents in food, including chocolate, fruit drops, carbonated wine, red wine, soft drinks, orange drink powder, and haw ball.

The wastewater was 100% decolorized in 25 min.
