DOCUMENT TYPE: Report CA Section: 50 (Propellants and Explosives) Studies of 14C-labeled phthalate phlegmatizers were continued by measuring the penetration behavior of camphor [76-22-2] and ethyl centralite [85-98-3] into nitrocellulose [9004-70-0] propellant grains by the radiotracer technique. The tracer methods used for these measurements are based on profile sectioning techniques in conjunction with liq. scintillation counting and autoradiog. Phlegmatizers were labeled with T. The measurements yield the values for diffusion coeffs., activation energies, and frequency factors. In addn., concn. profiles were derived showing a continuous concn. decrease from the surface into the interior of the grain. Moreover, the trend of phlegmatizers to migrate into nitrocellulose propellant powders increases in the order Et centralite < di-n-Bu phthalate [84-74-2] < camphor. Furthermore, a leveling of the concn. of the phlegmatizers during storage at ambient temp. was obsd. autoradiog. in camphor/propellant systems. By labeling different phlegmatizers with 14C and T the diffusion of a mixt. of deterrents into propellants can be studied. Measurements with a mixt. of 14C-di-n-Bu phthalate and T-Et centralite in ethanolic soln. point, among others, to a leveling of both diffusion coeffs. at higher values and an increase of the penetration depth contrary to the behavior of the individual deterrents.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 50 (Propellants and Explosives) The chem. degrdn. of Australian propellants in extended 2-5 yr tests and the correlation between heat-test time and stabilizer content are discussed. The Abel heat provides an indication of effective stabilizer content for most of the diphenylamine [122-39-4]-stabilized single-base propellants, although the results are scattered. As a screening test, however, it has a significant weakness in that a high result (long time) can be recorded for some propellants which contain very low effective stabilizer after accelerated aging. For the double-base propellant M9, a reasonable correlation between Et centralite [85-98-3] and the heat test time is obtained. The other 2 double-base propellants CD/T and WT144-048 show a general trend between heat-test time and effective stabilizer, although the correlation is poor. No indication of stabilizer content can be obtained from the heat-test results of 7 triple-base propellants. The variable results are possibly due to interference from nitroguanidine [556-88-7] or its complex with Et centralite.
