- Clindamycin-associated colitis in hamsters: protection with vancomycin
- Clindamycin-associated colitis in hamsters: protection with vancomycin. Bartlett, John G.; Onderdonk, Andrew B.; Cisneros, Ronald L. (Infect. Dis. Res. Lab., Boston VA Hosp., Boston, Mass., USA). Gastroenterology, 73(4, Pt. 1), 772-6 (English) 1977. CODEN: GASTAB. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) Vancomycin [1404-90-6], bacitracin [1405-87-4], and (to a lesser extent) gentamicin [1403-66-3] protected hamsters from the lethal enterocolitis induced by a subsequent challenge with clindamycin phosphate (I phosphate) [24729-96-2]. Gentamicin, alone or in combination with vancomycin, was also protective against lincomycin-HCl [859-18-7]-induced enterocolitis. The I enterocolitis was presumably related to alterations in the intestinal flora, and this antibiotic did result in a doubling of the colonic coliforms. These organisms were similarly increased in animals treated with vancomycin and I, however, suggesting that coliforms did not play a crit. role in the enterocolitis. Vancomycin did decrease clostridia counts, this organism serving simply as a marker for activity against certain gram-pos. bacteria.

- Experimental treatment of birds with respiratory mycoplasmosis. Fedorchuk, T. G. (Trest "L'vovptitseprom", Lvov, USSR). Veterinariya (Moscow), (4), 64-6 (Russian) 1977. CODEN: VETNAL. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) Treatment of birds injected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum with aerosols contg. streptomycin sulfate [3810-74-0], oxytetracycline-HCl [2058-46-0], oxytetracycline-streptomycin mixt. [8003-09-6], or oleandomycin-tetracycline mixt. [8060-63-7] produced clin. improvement in 2 days, whereas oral administration of levomycetin [56-75-7], oxytetracycline [79-57-2], furazolidone [67-45-8], or erythromycin-levomycetin-oxytetracycline mixt. [63355-85-1] or i.m. injection of streptomycin sulfate, streptocillin [8025-06-7], dibiomycin [1111-27-9], kanamycin sulfate [25389-94-0], or lincomycin-HCl [859-18-7] produced no clin. improvement until 4-6 days of treatment. The duration of the therapeutic effects of i.m. administered antibiotics was 25-30 days, for aerosol antibiotics 12-18 days, and for oral antibiotics 18-22 days.
