E.g., redn. of I (RR1 = O) with NaBH4 in EtOH at 0° for 4 h gave 77% I (R = H, R1 = OH) (II). The hydroxy lactams were stereoselectively cyclized in HCO2H to give various heterocycles. Thus, treatment of II with HCO2H at room temp. for 18 h gave 92% III. The stereoselective prepn. of IV in 87% yield through cyclization of (Z)-V is reported. .
