ISSN: 0356-3456. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) The effect of humidity and temp. on the crystal structure of medetomidine-HCl [(±)-I-HCl] [86347-15-1] was detd. I-HCl appears in 2 different structural forms, which represent the anhyd. and hydrous one. Ambient relative humidity affects the dry-humid-transition. I-HCl is preserved as the anhyd. 14762-74-4 and 86347-15-1 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. form at a relative humidity <30% at room temp., while the hydrous form is maintained at the relative humidity above 30%. The transition from the anhyd. form to the hydrous one was irreversible. The binding of water in the hydrous structure of I-HCl was studied by IR and NMR. The amt. of water suggests that the hydrous form is a monohydrate. Upon heating, the hydrate starts to lose its water at 25°. The melting behavior of I-HCl in anomalous: 2 discrete meltings occur at 167 and 176°, resp. .
