The mild reaction conditions employed allow the efficient synthesis of a variety of cyclic carbonates that would be less conveniently obtained using reported methods. Thus, cyclization of the propargyl carbonates I (R, R1 = Me, H; Me, Me; Me, Et) in CH2Cl2 contg. (Ph3P)AuN(SO2CF3)2 gave 85-98% methylenedioxolanones II. Variability in the structure of the final product has been obsd. and is significantly dependent on the nature of the substituent attached to the alkyne moiety. .
