- Chromatographic study of vitamin B5 and its degradation products. Puech, A.; Monleaud, Mrs. J.; Jacob, M.; Lapiczak, G. (Lab. Pharm. Galenique, Fac. Pharm., Montpellier, Fr.). Ann. Pharm. Fr., 36(3-4), 191-5 (French) 1978. CODEN: APFRAD. ISSN: 0003-4509. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 64 (Pharmaceutical Analysis) Section cross-reference(s): 63 Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) [79-83-4], some of its salts, and some of its pharmaceutical degrdn. products were thin-layer-chromatographed at 18° on silica gel GF 254 with CHCl3-EtOH-HOAc (5:3.5:1.5). The plates were dried at 100° for 10 min, sprayed with 0.1N KMnO4 (pH 10.8), and dried at 100° for 10 min. The compds. appeared as yellow spots on a pink background; Rf values and sensitivities were, resp.: pantothenic acid, 0.80, 1.00 mg; Ca pantothenate [137-08-6], 0.76, 0.50 mg; Na pantothenate [867-81-2], 0.77, 0.50 mg; panthenol [81-13-0], 0.65, 0.50 mg; pantoyl lactone [599-04-2], 0.92, 0.05 mg; b-alanine [107-95-9], 0.08, 0.10 mg. These sensitivities were as good as or better than those obtainable with ninhydrin as spray reagent. When mixts. of the above compds. were sepd. by this method, the min. amts. detectable were increased slightly in some cases, and the Rf values fluctuated slightly. However, the Ca and Na salts remained the only substances which could not be resolved.
