The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to R = 5.6% for 1033 diffractometer data. The planar mols. form dimers with short contacts of 3.3 .ANG. between O(2) and the Me group attached to N(1), and the dimers are arranged crosswise in the crystal. Possible CH...O H bonds and dipole-induced dipole interactions between C(4)-O(4) carbonyl groups and adjacent pyrimidine rings are discussed as stabilizing forces for the structure. .

The values of the relative Gibbs surface excess and the small shift of the zero charge potential due to 1,3-DMU adsorption (ENI) indicate that the org. mols. are oriented parallel to the electrode surface within the entire region of an ideal polarizable interface. The Gibbs energy at max. adsorption is -35.4 kJ mol-1 and suggests weak chemisorption. This strategy of analyzing chronocoulometric data provides tools for a subsequent project aimed to address the role of e adsorbate structure on the thermodn. of adsorption and phase-formation of N- and C-alkylated uracil derivs. on single crystal electrodes. .
