DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Pregnant rats were treated orally with p-chloro-m-xylenol (PCMX)(I) [88-04-0] at dose levels of 0, 0.1, 0.3 or 0.9 g/kg/day from day 0 to day 19 of gestation, cesarean sections being performed on day 20 of gestation. In dams treated with 0.9 g PCMX/kg/day depression of body wt. gain and decrease of food consumption were obsd. in late stages of pregnancy. Four of 19 treated, pregnant rats died. In fetuses, treatment with 0.9 g/kg/day of PCMX resulted in a significant depression of body wt. and a delayed ossification. However, no change was obsd. in external, skeletal and visceral findings. In offspring, no adverse effects on postnatal development were obsd. in any group.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) An antibacterial activity test on artificially contaminated human skin showed that a 1.44% wt./vol. soln. of chloroxylenol [88-04-0] in 70% alc. had greater persistence than a 0.5% soln. of chlorhexidine gluconate [18472-51-0] in 70% alc. Both antibacterial solns. showed similar activities when tested 5 and 10 min after application; 70% alc. was germicidal for <10 min after which it was not different from H2O control.
