DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 80 (Organic Analytical Chemistry) Dinitro-p-xylenes obtained by the nitration of mononitro-p-xylene with H2SO4-HNO3 at 70-90.degree. were sepd. by high-pressure liq. chromatog. on a Partisil 10 column by using hexane-EtOAc (7:1) mobile phase. The concn. of the isomers produced in the reaction varied only little with the reaction conditions (43-50, 35-40, and 15-7% for the 2,3-, 2,6-, and 2,5-dinitro derivs., resp.). Preparative chromatog. of 3-g samples on Porasil A was also carried out to sep. the fast-moving 2,5- and 2,6- from the slow-moving 2,3- deriv. The 2,5- and 2,6- derivs. were preparatively sepd. from each other on Partisil 10. .
