The glucuronides used are: 2,4-dinitrophenol- [51-28-5], 4-chloro-m-cresol- [59-50-7], 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol- [534-52-1], 4-chloro-3,5-xylenol- [78662-61-0], chlorthymol- [89-68-9], 5-chloro-7-iodo-8-quinolinol- [130-26-7], podophyllotoxin- [518-28-5], 2-phenyl-6-chlorophenol- [85-97-2], p-iodophenol [540-38-5], and phenylsulfazole-b-D-glucuronic acids. Because the aglycon is a nitrile, the treatment also involves administration of sodium thiosulfate to serve as an antidote for cyanide poisoning. Hyperglycemic agent (fructose, glucagon, etc.) is given to hyperacidify the tumors and thus enhance tumor b-glucuronidase activity. An alkalinizing agent is given to eliminate b-glucuronidase activity from the rest of the body. Another method for increasing the enzyme activity in tumors involves administering an estrogen to female patients and testosterone [58-22-0] to males. The technique (with some variation) is suggested as also suitable for the treatment of infections by b-glucuronidase-contg. bacteria.
