It inhibits papain and human cathepsin H and cathepsin B. According to its partially detd. amino acid sequence, human cystatin is highly homologous to egg white cystatin, but only distantly related to stefin, the cytosolic protein inhibitor of cysteine proteinases isolated from human polymorphonuclear granulocytes. Very probably human cystatin is identical with human g-trace, a microprotein of known sequence but hitherto unknown function. .

Both polyesters were prestrained to various elongations (0-500%) and aged in air and water at 23-85° and various pH's for 2-8 days. Strains (0-20%) had little effect on the degrdn. rate of Hytrel, but the degrdn. rate increased significantly for specimens strained at >200% elongation. For Estane, strain-enhancement was obsd. at the lowest strain (20%) while higher strains had no further effect. The response of Biomer and Tecoflex to human blood plasma, papain [9001-73-4], or pronase [9036-06-0] under strain (400%) was different from that under relaxed conditions. An in vivo model system, developed to characterize biol. changes that occur due to polymer implantation, showed cell/polymer surface interactions which might lead to degrdn. .
